Many of my students on longer courses have taken early retirement, or like myself, want to change their lifestyle and do something particularly rewarding, creative and very satisfying.
I have a comprehensive tool list for students attending my courses which I will send to you on request and the cost of those tools will very much depend on your budget. For those on short courses I have complete sets for you to use. Students on longer courses are going to need their own tools and the complete list of new hand tools could be between £800: and £1200:. I make an allowance for timber for those on short courses but for a longer course can cost from £300.00 upwards depending on your tastes in woods. Ebony is really rather expensive!

My Workshop.

My workshop is situated in a beautiful part of rural Devon dose to the Somerset border, near Bampton which is unspoiled and 5 miles from Exmoor. It is adjacent to our own house and in the middle of grassfields.
The teaching workshop, where hand work is done, is fight and airy, having central heating and essential in the South West, a de-humidifyer. I go to great lengths to acclimatise timber before sending finished pieces to clients. Its also more comfortable for us too! It has capacity for 3 students at any one time though I nearly always teach on a one to one basis.
I have a separate machine workshop equipped with planer/ thicknesser, bandsaw, panel saw (Wadkins), lathe and crosscut saw etc. The machines are maintained to the highest standards, and in the interest of safety you will not use them until you have had tuition on their use from me.
Both workshops have modern and efficient dust extractor and air filtration units
Workshop times are from 8.30am to 5.00pm. There are lunch making facilities including a small oven, toaster and kettle, and gingernuts in the workshop.

Michael Scott. Furniture maker.
Furniture Making Courses with Michael Scott
I trained for two years at Parnham. The John Makepiece School for Craftsmen in Wood gave me the necessary skills to set up my present workshop in this delightful part of Devon in 1985. I have been making contemporary furniture of an individual nature to commission ever since.
I opened my teaching workshop in 1994 for makers, hobbyists and those who want to either start a business or gain employment in established workshops. Many of my students have achieved this I am fortunate to be able to pass on the skills and techniques I have learned either through my training with such tutors as Rob Ingham, Alan Peters, David Colwell, David Fields and other respected designers and makers; and from my business of making furniture for clients, many of whom return to commission more from me. I was elected a member of the Devon Guild of Craftsmen in 1987.
When I am not teaching I will be making furniture for my clients, so students gain by seeing a craftsman practising his skills at the bench or drawing board. Naturally, my students always come first and I am always available to give the appropriate lecture or guidance when the time is right for the student.

Course details.
Furniture making Courses with Michael Scott
My courses are designed and tailored for each individual student and while the workshop has the capacity for up to 3 students I almost always teach on a one to one basis. Students learn very quickly with this arrangement and their progress is very rapid. Courses can begin at any time of the year when there is a vacancy so there is a good lively mix of talents and fresh ideas in the workshop.
I structure the courses so that participants will learn how to handle their tools and fine tune them to perform to perfection. There is the world of difference between a well tuned plane or tenon saw and one straight from the box so that using them becomes a joy rather than a grunt. This gives the confidence to begin making your first piece of furniture within the first 2 to 3 days; a simple piece such as a small table or box, emphasising the importance of accurate measuring and marking, planing and cutting. Tools are then prepared as they are needed for the next process. You will then be ready to start something more adventurous and demanding.
I give a series of technical lectures throughout my courses on the nature and growth of wood, its faults, glues, finishing, etc. , and also business planning and marketing. These help one to understand at a deep level the nature of the material that we love to use. We also visit woodyards, exhibitions and galleries.

You will be given sound advice on basic to advanced techniques, to suit your level of skill from simple jointing to drawer making, dovetailing, laminating and veneering. Even if You have never handled a chisel before you will be delighted with your achievements.
My aim is to make your stay here instructive and enjoyable. Wood is such a delightful natural material and it is fun to use its structural and aesthetic properties to achieve one's aims of making beautiful furniture.
Help will be given in designing pieces you want to make, enabling sound construction and good workshop practice. As your skills develop you will be able to make more advanced furniture and begin to find your own style in designing and at the end of your course you will have learned new techniques, and made furniture. On longer courses you will have a good portfolio of work to show for exhibition, sale or your own use.
